24 Beers of Christmas – December 2nd: Great Lakes Brewery Karma Citra
An award winning beer, from an award winning brewery. Great Lakes Brewery‘s Karma Citra is a single hop American IPA which in 2016 was named the best seasonal or specialty beer in Ontario at the Golden Tap Awards. Also displaying a silver medal from the 2014 Canadian Brewing Awards in its trophy case, Karma Citra has proven to be a fan favourite year-after-year.
First brewed in Etobicoke, Ontario, in 2011, Karma Citra is appropriately named for the sole hop cultivar they use in the production of the beer – Citra. Citra hops originate from the Yakima Valley in Washington State; a region which represents nearly three quarters of all hop production in the United States. First released in 2007, Citra has become a favourite hop among producers of American-style IPAs for their powerful citrus and tropical fruit characteristics.
This beer is quite hop forward, from it’s beautiful aroma to the taste, which presents a fairly assertive, resinous flavour that would satisfy any hophead. That might sound a little deceptive, as this can actually be a very approachable beer. There is a light, clean and somewhat bready malt backbone that is perfectly balanced to curb bitterness and let the distinctive flavour profile from the hops shine. You can expect pine, strong citrus, lime, melon and tropical fruit flavours like passionfruit.
