24 Beers of Christmas – December 4th: Flying Monkeys 12 Minutes to Destiny
Light-bodied and full of flavour. Known for their unique and sometimes over-the-top beers, Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery out of Barrie, Ontario, is never the boring choice. While 12 Minutes to Destiny certainly isn’t the flashiest beer they’ve ever produced, it is another example of how you can use uncommon ingredients to take an otherwise boring beer style and turn it into something special.
12 Minutes to Destiny is a Fruit Beer with the base style of an all-grain American Light Lager. The latter is a style designed to be relatively neutral, devoid of flavour. And while the Flying Monkeys managed to maintain the refreshing and easy drinking characteristics of a light lager, they introduced some more complex flavours adding botanicals like hibiscus, rose hips and orange peel, along with fresh raspberries. The outcome is fruity, tremendously floral, in part from late hopping with Saaz hops, somewhat tart and completely enjoyable.
