24 Beers of Christmas – December 20th: Clifford Porter
Beefsteaks and Porter are good belly mortar. Rich, complex and utterly delicious, Porters are no longer utilitarian beers; they’re treats.
Clifford Brewing Co.‘s Porter is a perfect choice for the first day of Winter. Though on paper you would call it an American Porter, it presents an exceptional blend of luscious Old World and bold New World character. It has a more pronounced roast, stronger bitterness and higher alcohol content than you would expect from an English Porter. It also drinks dryer and with a more aggressive than smooth feel to it. But it employs traditional British Fuggle hops, which does provide more of those traditional herbal and ‘forest floor’ qualities.
Clifford Porter is a three time Gold Medal winning brew that brings big espresso, dark chocolate, dark dried fruit and caramel malt to the forefront, with a lingering spice and an earthy, Autumny finish. Overall a tremendously satisfying brew.
Style: American Porter – 5.9% ABV, 35 IBU
Food pairings: Grilled steak, Gruyère, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
